Easy Ways to Get Started in Bird Identification
To many novice bird watchers, the art of bird identification sounds difficult
or downright impossible. But, with some quick tips and a little knowledge, bird
identification can be a fun and easy to learn hobby.
Most bird watchers, or birders, get started with the hobby in their own backyard.
According to many bird watching clubs, this technique is the simplest and fasted
way to begin learning about bird identification. If a backyard setting is not
feasible, the use of local or state parks is the second favorite choice.
To get started all you will need is an inexpensive pair of binoculars, a bird
feeder, a notebook and a field guide. Experienced birders recommend that novices
set up a bird feeder in their back yard to attract an adequate amount of birds.
Once the birds start visiting, they recommend that beginner's use their notebook
and field guide to observe and document six main characteristics of the birds
that they see.
These six main categories are the simplest to differentiate and also a great
place to start gaining knowledge. The six categories include the color of the
bird, its shape, its size, its general habits, its habitat and finally, its
song or call.
Another tip for novice birders is to keep their beginning identification skills
limited to the easy bird groups and common species. These birds include hawks,
owls and wrens. These types of birds have fewer differences and not as many
species to identify. Once a beginner can distinguish these birds easily they
will be ready to move on to tougher, more complicated species such as warblers
and woodpeckers.
Perhaps the best way for a beginner to learn about bird identification is through
a bird watching group or club. By joining other bird watchers, beginners can
acquire the knowledge to identify many types of birds in a short amount of time.
