What is Birdwatching?
Birdwatching, also called birding, is the activity of observing wild birds
in their natural habitat. Birdwatching means learning to identify different
species of birds and understand what they are doing.
Birdwatching can be done in any natural location. Many bird watchers observe
birds in their back yards, in parks, while traveling and on organized bird watching
tours.
Bird watchers study the sizes, colors, flight patterns and behaviors of wild
birds. They also study their songs, their feeding habits and their migration
habits. While studying the birds, bird watchers usually take notes and pictures
to document what they find. These notes consist of the bird's location, physical
description, and behavior.
To aid in identification and note taking, bird watchers usually use a field
guides specific to the area they are observing. Field guides are books that
include color photos and detailed descriptions of many different types of birds.
Currently, over 51.3 million Americans participate in birdwatching. Birdwatchers
advocate the hobby stating that it is fun, satisfying, informative, and healthy.
They also say that birdwatching promotes quality family bonding and companionship.
Birdwatching can be a healthy hobby because it promotes outdoor activities
such as walking and hiking and gives the enthusiast personal time to relax and
meditate.
Since birdwatching is becoming such a popular hobby, many organizations have
been founded to promote it. These organizations, including the Audubon Society,
dedicate tours, magazines, conventions and funding to the art of birdwatching.
If birdwatching sounds like a fun hobby to you, it is very easy to get started.
To begin you only need a decent pair of binoculars, a field guide and a notebook.
As you become more experienced, you may want top purchase multiple field guides,
bird tracking software and a camera to capture photos of your finds.
Beginning birders can also benefit from joining a birdwatching club. Through
outings and meetings, beginners can learn a lot in a short amount of time.
