Five herbs for women
By: Anonymous
Question : I HAVE been told that taking herbal supplements is safer than going for hormone replacement therapy. I am 46 years old and am suffering from headaches, irritability, a decreased flow in my monthly periods, hot flushes and sometimes nausea. A doctor has confirmed that I am peri-menopausal. Could you advise me on what is available?
Answer : THERE are five herbs that are beneficial for women at this stage in their lives. They are dong quai, black cohosh, sage, soy and red clover.
Dong quai, popularly referred to as "female ginseng", is a blood tonic that helps tone the uterus, nourishes the blood and stimulates healthy circulation. It has been traditionally used to regulate menstruation, alleviate painful menstruation and suppress uterine bleeding. Black cohosh is useful for treating menopausal symptoms such as hot flushes, night sweats, irritability, depression and sleep disturbances.
Red clover is known to lower cholesterol levels due to its isoflavone content. Red clover may also improve cardiovascular health by protecting the elasticity of the large arteries. Sage may help to relieve excessive perspiration. In addition, it is often used as a digestive tonic. Soy may ease menopause symptoms and protect against the development of osteoporosis and certain cancers.
Asians have long known the health benefits of soyabeans, and studies have confirmed that they suffer less from menopause-related hot flushes, osteoporosis and heart disease. Look for a supplement that has all these five herbs in it.
In the meantime, eat food that is rich in phytoestrogens, especially soy. Flaxseed oil, seaweed, nuts, whole grains, apples, celery, parsley and alfalfa are also good sources of phytoestrogens. Taking lots of fresh fruits and vegetables lowers a woman's risk of getting breast cancer, arthritis and heart disease. Go for deep coldwater fish as well.
Do a liver-cleansing regime at the first onset of symptoms. You may take the herbs combining milk thistle and dandelion along with lecithin. Exercise regularly. An average of 3.5 hours of exercise per week has been shown to prevent hot flushes.
